The summer storms are back. Across Gauteng, Mpumalanga, the Free State and Limpopo, afternoon thunderstorms roll in fast from November to March, often with heavy rain, hail and lightning. Work does not stop for the weather, but the right gear decides whether your team stays dry, visible and on their feet, or spends the afternoon soaked, slipping and hard to see.
Here is what every site, farm, mine and yard should have ready before the next storm hits.
1. A Rain Suit That Actually Keeps the Water Out
A cheap plastic poncho tears on the first nail. A proper PVC rain suit, jacket and pants together, keeps your team dry from hood to ankle and lasts the whole season.
- Hydro Rain Suit (DHYDRO): our best-selling rain suit. PVC-coated with reinforced seams, a fixed hood with drawstring, storm flaps over the zip and an elasticated waist. Built for mining, construction and general outdoor work. Sizes S to 5XL.
- Storm Hydroplus Rain Suit: the heavy-duty option in bright orange, with heat-sealed seams, underarm air vents and 50mm reflective tape on the arms, waist and legs, so your team stays seen in a downpour.
- Rubberised Rain Suit: a tough, affordable jacket and pants set with fully taped seams and large press studs that are easy to use with gloves on.

2. Footwear That Grips When the Ground Turns to Mud
Slips, trips and falls rise sharply in the wet. Wet leather boots also wear out faster and leave feet cold and blistered by the end of the shift. When the site turns to mud, a safety gumboot is the right tool.
- Dromex Sparticus S5 Gumboot: steel toe cap, steel midsole, SRC slip-resistant sole and anti-static protection, in waterproof PVC and nitrile. Sizes 4 to 13.
- Wayne Gripper Steel Toe Gumboots: a trusted name on South African sites, with a steel toe cap.

3. Be Seen in the Grey
Heavy cloud and rain cut visibility for drivers and machine operators, sometimes to a few metres. Hi-viz is your team's first line of defence near vehicles, roads and moving plant.
- Hi-Viz Reflective Full Zip Vest: a quick, low-cost layer that goes over any rain suit or jacket.
- Hi-Vis Reflective Traffic Jacket: protects against wind and light rain, with zip-off sleeves that turn it into a vest when the sun comes back out.
- Dromex Storm WetPro Hi-Vis Jacket: a thermal hi-vis jacket made for wet weather, for crews who work through the worst of it.

4. Quick Storm-Season Safety Checklist
- Stop outdoor work when lightning is close, and wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunder before going back out.
- Keep spare rain suits on site for visitors, contractors and new starters.
- Check gumboots and rain suits for splits and worn soles at the start of the season.
- Hang wet rain gear to dry properly after each shift, so it does not crack or grow mould.
- Wear hi-viz over rain gear, not under it.
- Put cones and barriers around slippery walkways and flooded areas.
